Oh this is still here…

A lot of time has passed since my last post. But I still intend to have a presence of some sort. I also intend to reinvent this thing into something a bit more personal and art focused.

For most of you who started following me because you want to watch fansubs: I still intend to help finish yw shadowside fansubs. But I don’t promise that I will work on anything else. In fact, I think I am strongly leaning towards retiring from translation work. It’s been an interesting phase of my life, but I think I’ve gotten the most out of it already. It’s just not as fun as when I started. But I will finish what I started. (There’s only like…. 7 or so episodes left to be released. I’m kicking myself for that too)

For those of you who want to be my friends (d’awwww I love you too sweetheart!), I welcome you to a new phase of my life. I’ll still be an appreciator of Yo-kai Watch, but it will be a bit more low key.

I’ve found that I’ve enjoyed doing typesetting work (of the extremely advanced and technical variety) a lot more than translation. And I’ve found that doing 3D art and motion graphics to be even more enjoyable still. The thing that fuels my hobbies is fun. And passion. But fun most importantly. Without that there is no motivation. I had to be honest about that to myself first before I could be honest about that to you.

This is Lumpstud, back for more Exclamation Point Yo-kai Watch!

The new Yo-kai this week was none other than Yametaishi, a combination of the phrase 辞めたいし (yametaishi), meaning “I wanna quit [X]” or “I don’t wanna [do X] anymore,” with “shi” replaced with the kanji 師 (shi) for a teacher/mentor. In the localization he’s known as N'more, a simple contraction of “No more.”

You guys know Gachinkozo by now, as he first showed up way back in Episode 138. Meaning Manji’s explained his name already, but I’ll go over it again for One Chance sake. Basically: ガチンコ (gachinko, competing seriously/earnestly) and 小僧 (kozou, boy/youngster). When he becomes One Chance Side, his name becomes ガチンコ増 - pronounced exactly the same, but instead meaning that there’s an increase (増 zou) in his earnest competing (ガチンコ gachinko). It’s a lame pun so I localized it as a lame pun. lol

Our next release in the works is EP194 of the original series, but as you may have heard, the current series (Yo-kai Academy Y) recently went on hiatus from airing new episodes in Japan, presumably due to production delays on account of the coronavirus. As a result, we’re considering adjusting our plans after 194 for any releases while the series is on hiatus. Well that sure was like two and a half months of nothing. We’re making progress slowly but surely though. Also, this was the episode I had to translate entirely by ear. I think it went slightly better than I expected :L Also some really nice typesetting work was done on this episode so huge thanks to the rest of the team @spectersubs.

The Yo-kai Meeting part of this episode references the TV Show 101st Marriage Proposal, except Whisper gets one less proposal for some reason. Whisper’s always getting the short end of the stick, huh. Also this is the last episode of that segment which makes me kinda sad because it was pretty good. ~~Am I the only one who would actually want to watch a movie where everyone is Whisper?~~

The new Yo-kai this episode was Sutton-kyou, a combination of suttonkyou
(素っ頓狂), which I translated a bunch of different ways in the episode but in dictionary terms is an adjective that means “in disarray,” “wild” etc., and the honorific kyou (卿), meaning “lord” or “sir.” In English, this Yo-kai is called Lord Shrillington which is pretty much a one-to-one translation with a little posh flair so that turned out pretty good.

Release schedule will still be pretty inconsistent from here on out, but in good news I’m done with all the translation for the next three episodes. So yes, the gap-filling will happen even though it’s been over two years now damn it.

Ohagi (おはぎ) are rice balls with a coating of sweet red bean paste or soy flour. Obanyaki (大判焼き) is a type of Japanese will with sweet red bean paste.

The Yo-kai of the week is Tenohira-gaeshi (てのひらがえし), which comes from 手のひら返し, literally meaning “to turn the palm of your hand,” but an expression meaning for one to quickly change their attitude from what it was before.

Additionally, the Oldie Wig Club man this week is Sei Nimen (二面聖), which is pronounced surname-first the same as Nimensei (二面性), meaning “two-facedness,” in reference to his occupation as a spy.

The episodes name in Japanese, “Awatenbou no Satan Claus” is reference to a old Japanese christmas song (circa 1971 according to Japanese Wikipedia https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/クリスマスの音楽一覧) called “Awatenbou no Santa Claus” (あわてんぼうのサンタクロース) Here’s performance of that same song on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVaXcANIank

The subtitles there translates the title to “Scatterbrained Santa Claus” but I went with “The Absentminded Satan Claus” because I liked that translation a little better.
